TW: Ableism How Autism $peaks Handled The 50 Cent Controversy
50 Cent: Yeah just saw your picture fool you look autistic. I dont want no special ed kids on my time line follow some body else.
Autism $peaks: That’s so offensive! It’s not “looks autistic.” It’s “looks like you have autism!”
What really bugs me is:
I cannot tell whether they literally said this or whether it’s just commentary on their general practices. I saw a recentish blog post where someone was talking about their behavior and characterizing some of the demonizing as “missteps”. Supposedly they are trying to change, but honestly, given their history, I really don’t think a “change” is possible; the soul of the organization is corrupt, and you cannot generally heal organizations that are founded on evil intent, no matter how well-meaning they were in forming that intent. The “solution” would be to dissolve the organization and make a new one.
The reason they will not do this is that it would not contribute to making more money telling people that autistic people are not worthy to speak for themselves.
This was just a humorous commentary on their general practices. I agree the Autism $peaks is a terrible organization that is beyond the point of being able to change.
Is this 50 Cent situation real or is it made up to make an example of how Autism $peaks would handle it?
50 Cent actually tweeted that, but, after a lot of heat from the autism/autistic community, he deleted that tweet. He hasn’t issued an apology though.
Autism $peaks did not handle it this way. This is merely a way to make fun of A$ and their staunch use of “person first” language.
